Brief description of course:

This is an innovative course in a new and rapidly developing area of modern society that will give you the opportunity for in-depth study of the implications and applications of modern technologies. The focus is on people’s use of technology rather than technology for its own sake.

The course focuses on the use of technologies in a social setting – exploring how technologies are part of the social and working structures of everyday life. You will examine how people use technologies such as mobile phones, email, forums, blogs, instant messaging and social networking sites like Facebook or sites like youtube and flickr which are primarily there to share images and video. You will look at attempts to pool and share knowledge through applications like wikis and information management systems. You will study how people communicate with each other and develop networks both in a working and a social environment. You can obtain valuable experience in how to manage these technologies and to help others use them to their full potential. For example, you might learn how to manage a forum and moderate it, how to deal with issues like flaming and spamming, and how to get a work force to share and develop documents together. There are many new and challenging opportunities for jobs in this developing sector where expertise is still scarce.
